Sustainability: a global issue

We are often asked where we source our natural materials from, how they and then our products are manufactured and what the social conditions are like for their production. This cannot be explained in one sentence. But we try to keep it short.

Wherever possible, we source the trimming materials and woods for our brushes, brooms and other beautiful natural products from regional producers. However, certain fillings, such as the South American arenga, also come from other parts of the world. This is due to the specific properties of certain fibers and bristles, which do not grow and thrive everywhere.

It is very important to us to act in a climate-neutral and socially responsible manner when sourcing raw materials. To do this, we often have to travel the world and visit producers on site to ensure that local trade is socially responsible and as environmentally friendly as possible. We cannot always rely on certificates because small producers often cannot afford the expensive certifications. We therefore rely on direct agreements and our own on-site inspections and believe this is the best way to be sure.

An example:

Coconut doormats are practical, durable and easy to make. They are made of wire and coconut fiber because it is more resistant and wet-proof than almost any other plant fiber. Instead of importing coconut fibers from Sri Lanka or India and having mats produced here, we source the mats directly from the country of origin. Why? To keep the added value in the country of origin and at the same time support local crafts and trades. We do not purchase the mats from any wholesalers, but directly from small local businesses (often family businesses). We have already visited “our” doormat producer several times ourselves and have always been convinced that the highest possible standards are maintained locally in terms of occupational health and safety and production.

Our trimmings and woods are always of natural origin - there is the right material for every purpose! For trimmings of animal origin, we mostly use pig bristles, horsehair or goat hair, as well as ostrich feathers; for plant fibers, we use rice straw, arenga, bassine and many others. If you want to find out more about the great properties of the different materials for our brushes and brooms, click here for our blog post.

Incidentally, our sustainable production methods also include accepting that some materials are only available seasonally, are difficult to obtain and are sometimes not available at all - for example, if the fiber harvest is low due to poor weather conditions. We then refrain from producing in order to keep the prices of our products stable. That's why not all of our products are always available - that's just the way it is when you work with natural materials.

Do you have any questions about our materials and products? Then please send them to us by e-mail or via our social media accounts - we will do our best to answer them as quickly and in as much detail as possible!
